Overview of Selection Procedures

There are two types of fencing events at the 2008 Olympic Games: Individual and Team.

Men's Epee, Men's Sabre, Women's Foil, and Women's Sabre have both an individual and team event. For those countries that qualify teams, their 3 team members will fence both the team event and the individual event. Each country is responsible for naming those fencers.

Men's Foil and Women's Epee have only an individual event. These individuals are determined strictly by the FIE rankings as of April 1.

As of April 1, the FIE determined which countries qualified teams in ME, MS, WF, and WS, and the individual fencers who's countries didn't qualify teams. Also determined were those fencers who qualified for MF and WE events.
