At the 2007 World Fencing Championships on Tuesday, the U.S. saber men
achieved two top-16 finishes, and Stanislav Pozkniakov, a legend in the
sport, earned an incredible fifth individual title.
2004 Olympic Veteran Keeth Smart (29, Brooklyn, N.Y.) had the highest U.S.
finish. He defeated Ignacio Casares of Spain 15-11 in the round of 64,
Balazs Lontay of Hungary in the next round 15-14, and then fell to the
Ukraine's Vladimir Lukashenko 15-14 in his attempt to reach the
quarterfinals.
Both Ivan Lee and Tim Morehouse fell to the indominable Pozdniakov. Lee (26,
Brooklyn, N.Y.) met the Russian in the round of 32 and lost the bout 15-9;
Morehouse lost to Pozdniakov in the next round, 15-12.
Jason Rogers (24, Los Angeles, Calif.) lost his match in the round of 64 to
Hanming Zhou of China, 15-8.
After preliminary rounds of the individual men's epee event also fenced
today, two U.S. men's epeeists advanced to tomorrow's final rounds. Ben
Ungar (21, Bronx, N.Y.) and 2004 Olympic veteran Soren Thompson (26, San
Diego, Calif.) both survived early elimination bouts.
Cody Mattern (26, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Seth Kelsey (26, Colorado
Springs, Colo.) both advanced with byes to tomorrow's action, though Mattern
will have to face Ungar in the morning's first elimination bout.
