The first medals podium of the 2007 World Fencing Championships in St.
Petersburg did not feature a U.S. fencer.
2004 Olympic gold medallist and 2006 World silver medallist Mariel Zagunis (22,
Beaverton, Ore.) was the highest finishing U.S. woman’s saber fencer, reaching
fifth place. Sada Jacobson (24, Dunwoody, Ga.), 2004 Olympic bronze medallist,
finished sixth.
2006 World Champion Rebecca Ward (17, Portland, Ore.) finished 17th.
Ward and Zagunis both ran into tough Polish competitors in the final phases of
the competition. Ward, seeded second going into the competition, lost to
Aleksandra Socha of Poland 15-14 in the round of 32.
Zagunis, seeded third, lost to Bogna Jozwiak 15-14 in her attempt to reach the
medal round.
Jacobson lost her quarterfinal bout to Gioia Marzocca of Italy, 15-10.
Also on Saturday, the Individual Men’s Foil competition got underway. Pools and
preliminary elimination bouts were fenced, and by the end of the day, three of
the four U.S. men advanced to the final day of competition.
Gerek Meinhardt (17, San Francisco, Calif.) is ranked #34 going into the final
elimination phase. Meinhardt lost only one bout in his preliminary pool.
2004 Olympians Jed Dupree and Jon Tiomkin are seeded 54th and 48th,
respectively. The fourth U.S. men’s foilist, Andras Horanyi, lost his
