The U.S. Fencing Association announces the selection of the team that will
represent the United States at the 2006 Senior World Championships, to be
held Sept. 28 - Oct. 7 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The World Championships, held annually except in the year of the Olympic
Games, is the competition concluding a full year of World Cup competitions.
Fencers are seeded on the basis of rankings earned on the World Cup circuit
over the season.
Four fencers have been selected in each of six weapons - men's epee, foil
and saber and women's epee, foil and saber. Those athletes will compete in
the individual and team events.
This year's team has significant depth and experience. Twelve of the 24
athletes competing are Olympic veterans, including 2004 Olympic women's
saber gold medalist Mariel Zagunis (22, Beaverton, Ore.) and 2004 Olympic
bronze medalist Sada Jacobson (24, Dunwoody, Ga.).
In fact, three of the four members of the 2005 gold-medal U.S. women's saber
World Championship team return this year to try to regain their title. In
2006, the U.S. women earned a silver in the event.
This year, seven U.S. fencers are currently ranked in the top-16 of the
World Cup rankings. Many more have won medals or placed in the top eight of
the Olympic Games or World Cup competition. This year, the pre-Olympic
season, World Championships is considered an especially critical
competition; results from World Championships will count as important
qualifying points toward the Games in 2008.
A full schedule of events and results will be posted to the website
http://www.fencing2007.com, and will also be available directly on request
to media outlets. Please contact Cindy Bent Findlay for more information.
