Results from the 2007 World Veteran Fencing Championships
At the 2007 World Veteran Fencing Championships in Sydney, Australia, U.S.
Vets won a record eleven medals, surpassing even last year's historic
result.
Paul Apostol was the only gold medal winner, defending his 2006 60+ title in
men's saber.
Three U.S. athletes brought home silver medals: Diane Kallus (WE60+), Walter
Dragonetti (ME50-59) and Judith Offerle (WF50-59). Offerle's silver is the
best U.S. result to date in a Veteran Women's Championships.
Ellen O'Leary earned bronzes in both of her events, the WF60+ and WS60+.
James Adams (MF60+) and Ray Sexton III (ME60+) repeated their bronze medal
performances from 2006 in Bath, England.
Other bronze winners were Alex Kovacs (MS60+) (who lost to Apostol in the
semifinal round), Sally Still Gonsalves (WE50-59), and Jeannette
Starks-Faulkner (WF50-59), who lost to Offerle in the semifinals.
More than 250 fencers from 22 countries competed in all six weapons at these
World Championships: Men's and women's foil, épée, and saber, in two age
categories, 50-59 and 60+ and older.
The first World Veteran's Fencing Championships took place in 1998. The
Championships are held by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, the
international fencing federation. A veteran's men's épée demonstration event
was held at the 1997 World Championships in Capetown, South Africa. Women's
foil was added to the program and the events became an official
Championships in 1998. The Championships expanded to five weapons in 1999:
men's foil, women's foil, men's épée, women's épée and men's saber, and
added women's saber in 2005.
