Tournament Description

A multi-sport tournament for Western Hemisphere countries held every four years, in the year preceding the Olympic Games. The US Pan American Games team and the sports represented there are fielded under the auspices of the US Olympic Committee, the organization responsible for full funding for each of the sport teams.  No more than two individuals from a country are allowed to compete in the individual competitions in each of the six weapons.  For the four team competitions, a country may only bring three fencers for that team competition, of which two will be those fencing in the individual competition.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The 2006 Pan American Zonal Championships will be the basis for qualifying for the 2007 Pan American Games in accordance with the results of the individual and team competitions.

The team to the Pan American Games will consist of 3 fencers in Men’s Epee, Men’s Saber, Women’s Foil, and Women’s Saber; and 2 fencers in Men’s Foil and Women’s Epee.  This formula is based on the one for the 2008 Olympic Games

Each Team, for competition in Team Events (Men’s Epee, Men’s Saber, Women’s Foil, Women’s Saber), will qualify by finishing among the first 7 teams in the official ranking at the previous Pan American Senior Zonal Championships (Valencia, Venezuela October 22-29, 2006).

Each individual, for competition in Individual Events where there is also a Team Event competition (Men’s and Women’s Saber, Men’s Epee, Women’s Foil), will be selected from the members of the team for the team competitions. The top two fencers on the USFA Senior Team Point rankings, competing as members of a team in a team competition will be selected

Each individual, for competition in disciplines for which there are only individual events (Women’s Epee, Men’s Foil), will be designated according to their finish in the previous Pan American Senior Zonal Championships (Valencia, Venezuela, Oct. 22-29, 2006).   Maximum of 2 fencers per nation by the results until a field size of 16 per weapon has been achieved.

U.S. Fencers are selected for each weapon in which there is a team competition at the 2007 Pan American Games on the basis of USFA Senior Team Point standings. Points are awarded for results at domestic point competitions, 2006 World Championships and World Cup competitions, starting with the 2006 US National Championships.
