April 17 Junior Worlds report

JUNIOR AND CADET WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, BELEK, TURKEY -- The U.S. women's epee team of Christa French (19, Southlake, Texas), Courtney Hurley (16, San Antonio, Texas), Kelley Hurley (18, San Antonio, Texas), and Susannah Scanlan (16, St. Paul, Minn.) performed strongly today, defeating Germany on their way to seventh place.

The women beat Kazakhstan 45-27 in their first match and Germany 45-32 in their second before taking on Estonia.

The Hurley sisters, first Courtney and then Kelley, opened up a seven point lead early in the match, but the Estonian team fought back to a tie by the third-to-last encounter. The Estonians opened up a four-point lead in the semifinal encounter, and though Courtney Hurley closed the gap and outscored her opponent 5-4, the Estonian team prevailed 35-32.

The U.S. men's saber team of Ras Davidson (18, Newark, N.J.), Harrison Mahaffey (16, Los Angeles, Calif.), Aleksander Ochocki (16, Clark, N.J.) and Jeff Spear (18, Wynantskill, N.Y.) placed eleventh in the large saber team competition.

Seeded 11th, the U.S. men defeated the team from Kuwait 45-22 in the first round, the round of 32. They fell in a hard-fought match to the Korean team in the next round 45-44.

Tomorrow marks the final day of competition, which will close with the Junior Women's Foil and Junior Men's Epee Team events.
