THURS., 12 APRIL, BELEK, TURKEY -- On Thursday at the 2007 Junior and Cadet
World Championships, young Russian women dominated the Under-17 Foil event,
taking gold and silver as well as 5th place. Spain took home its first gold from
the Championships ever, in the Under-17 Men's Epee event.
All six U.S. cadets performed well, despite their youth and relative
inexperience. Nzingha Prescod (New York, N.Y.), only 14 years old, emerged from
the pools seeded 9th and defeated Yeung of Hong Kong 10-5 before losing a tough
match to eventual silver medalist Ekaterina Kazhikina of the Russia 7-6.
Kylei McGill (New York, N.Y.), also only 14, lost her first match to Saori
Nakano of Japan 10-8. Teammate Hayley Reese (16, Louisville, Ky.) also lost her
first match to Hungary's Fruzsina Farago 15-13.
Prescod will also compete in the individual Under-20 foil competition on Sunday,
April 15 and she and McGill will also represent the U.S. in the team event on
Wednesday, April 18.
Adam Watson (16, Richford, Vt.) lost a heartbreaking 15-14 bout in the round of
64 to the top seed in the competition, Florian Heimendinger of France.
Heimendinger went on to earn a bronze.
James Kaull (16, Washington, D.C.) won his first two DE matches against higher
seeds before losing to Mykael Lambert of Canada 15-10 in the round of 16.
Josh Dolezal (16, South Bend, Ind.) did not reach the tableau of 128, dropping
with a 1-5 record in the pools.

of Under-20 (Junior) competition.
