Rebecca Ward may have suffered a Friday the 13th jinx at the 2007 Junior and
Cadet World Championships today. She failed in her attempt to win back-to-back
Junior and Cadet titles, but still brought home the bronze in the Junior Women's
Saber event.
Ward (17, Portland, Ore.), who won the Cadet (Under-17) title on Tuesday, lost
her semifinal match to Ekaterina Diatchenk of Russia 15-9. Olga Kharlan of
Russia, whom Ward beat in Tuesday's semifinals, went on to defeat Diatchenk and
win the gold.
Ward's teammates Caroline Vloka (16, Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and Dagmara
Wozniak (18, Colonia, N.J.) both fell in the round of 32. Vloka, seeded 5th out
of the pools, was upset in her match by the 37rd seed Eun Hee Jung of Korea
15-10. Wozniak fell to Elena Munteanu of Romania, 15-13.
In the Junior (Under-20) Men's Foil event, Ariel DeSmet achieved the highest
finish, missing the round of eight by one touch in a match that went to time.
DeSmet lost 7-6 to Yong Tae Im of Korea, the eventual silver medalist.
Gerek Meinhardt lost his second DE bout to Valerio Aspromonte of Italy 15-7, who
went on to win a bronze. Chinman lost his first, in the round of 64, to
Moldavia's Boris Paghiev, 15-10.
Junior competition continues tomorrow with Under-20 Men's Saber and Women's
