Fencing is coming to Richmond! The United States Fencing Association announces the first Division I competition of the regular North American Cup season, to be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center December 8-10, 2006.
About 1,000 participants will compete in events in the three fencing weapons (foil, épée, saber), in Men's and Women's Division I and Veteran events. At least 60 competitors from the Virginia area will compete.
2004 U.S. Olympic Bronze medalist Sada Jacobson and 2006 World Champion Rebecca Ward are only two of the exceptional athletes expected to compete.
The Richmond Cup is one in a series of four tournaments this season at which fencers will earn points towards selection of the Senior World Championships team, which will compete at the World Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia in October 2007.
Veteran fencers (over the age of 50) are also competing for spots on the team to the Veteran World Championships in Sydney in September 2007.
Athletes from Canada and many European nations will also compete, including World Championship and Olympic medalists.
The North American Cup is the title of the series of national tournaments held throughout the U.S. each year. Athletes earn points at these tournaments used in national point standings that are the basis for selection to U.S. international teams.
Competition begins Friday, December 8. Fencing begins at 8:30a.m. each day and will continue through the early evening. Two scheduled semifinals will take place each day on the main stage. Admission is free and open to the public. Local volunteers will be on hand toprovide spectator information.
